Critical factors for the development of a Smart Nation
It is one thing to announce a policy, but it is another to translate the ideas into practice. In the case of the Smart Nation, three issues are crucial: digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, and digital literacy.
Digital infrastructure
Digital infrastructure is the foundation of a Smart Nation. âAdvances in digital infrastructure support innovation and allow for the social and economic growth of societyâ (Public Digital Infrastructure, n.d.). From 2016 to 2018, the number of Wireless@SG hot spots rose from 10,000 to 20,000 (Baharudin, 2018) to provide people with âfree Wi-Fi access in public places across Singapore with a surfing speed of up to 5Mbpsâ (Wireless@SG, n.d.). By 2020, Singapore will roll out the fifth generation of wireless networks (5G) progressively, with at least half of the nation covered with a standalone network by the end of 2022 (Choudhury, 2019; Whatâs the Buzz about 5G?, 2019). Minister for Communications and Information, S Iswaran, said that 5G technology and networks would constitute a critical part of Singaporeâs digital economy (Kwang, 2019). 5G âoffers faster connections, more reliability and greater capacity at lower costsâ (Castro, 2019). It will âenable various high-bandwidth and low-latency Smart City applicationsâ (Castro, 2019), including more extensive use of untethered factory robots, rapid roll-out of industrial IoT services and networks for specialized services like port-to-ship communications, more extensive use of drones to deliver services, and mass-scale adoption of AVs (Choudhury, 2019).
